My new book will be published by the end of September. It is called Politics and Rhetoric: A Critical Introduction (London: Routledge, 2014) [click title to visit publisher website – and see photo on the right]. It’s an introductory discussion of the significance of rhetoric for exploring and analysing politics. It’s meant for the interested, higher-level reader rather than the complete newcomer and it looks at the debates, techniques and continuing value of rhetorical terminology for exploring political action. It has chapters on democracy and the emotions, the media, and gender. It reflects a good deal of the courses on rhetoric I have been teaching for the past number years. I am particularly pleased with the cover, which is about as frightening as I could wish for. It’s a great painting (titled ‘Rhetoric’) by Matt Sesow and a reminder that rhetoric can be disturbing and not just seductive or inspirational.
